BAUMBACH WINES
2005 Barbera
Silver medal award winner from the American Wine Society 2007.
Type of grape:
Barbera is a true Italian varietal showing controlled vigor and productivity from
the clay-rich soils of Placer County. The strength of this grape in the
foothills is it's ability to withstand the heat of summer while retaining
abundant amounts of malic acid. This latter point is important as the malic acid in Barbera is softened to lactic acid at the end of fermentation.
Description of Wine: Barbera is a medium-bodied, flavorful red wine combined with two other "naturalized" Italian varietals, Charbono and
Aglianico. This is a fruit forward, richly flavored wine with complexity created
by a unique blend of 77% Barbera, 13%
Charbono and 10% Aglianico. This Barbera delivers bright plum and black
cherry aromas with crisp acidity and modest tannins. It is a dark purple color with ripe, black fruit aromas and a decadent
flavor and naturally high in acid and low in tannins. Aglianico was added to
this Barbera to create a deeper tannic structure complementing the softer, complex organoleptics (organic aromas)of Charbono. This Barbera responded
particularly well to American Oak, which imparts a hint of smoke and vanilla
tones.
